Thorntek installing new three-phase underground supply on a Sydney job

3 PHASE POWER

Three phase power upgrades across Sydney, handled by one crew.

Aircon tripping the main every January? EV charger on order? Granny flat firing up? Single phase has run out of room. We upgrade the service, the mains and the switchboard as one job, with the network application lodged, designed and energised by Thorntek.

01

Why people upgrade to three phase in Sydney

A single-phase service was sized for a cooktop, hot water and one air conditioner. Modern homes ask for more: ducted air, a pool pump and heat pump, an EV charger, sometimes a granny flat.

Three phase gives you three actives instead of one. That means more usable capacity and the load spreads across the phases, so the mains and switchboard aren't the limit when everything runs at once.

When a home actually needs three phase

Look up at the point of attachment. Two conductors in means single phase, four means three phase. Or send us a photo and we will confirm it without you opening anything.

Overhead or underground — both upgrade paths in-house

Tired weatherboard fascia? We re-fix the point of attachment back to solid timber as part of the job. Salt-corroded coastal hardware gets marine-grade stainless in the same visit.

02

The network application is ours to lodge

The network approves the new connection before any conductor changes. As a Level 2 ASP accredited with both Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy, we lodge the application, design the connection to AS/NZS 3000 and book the energisation. You don't deal with the network or the retailer.

On the changeover day

One day on site. Old mains out, new three-phase mains in, new board built and tested, meter swapped, power back on by knock-off — with the compliance certificate to follow the same day. The procedure is ours to worry about, not yours.

03

What the new switchboard is designed to do

A three-phase board spreads the load across the phases and is built for what's next. It includes:

  • A four-pole main switch sized for the new service.
  • An RCBO (safety switch plus breaker) on every circuit.
  • Surge protection on the incoming supply.
  • A dedicated circuit pre-run for an EV charger or ducted air.
  • Spare ways for the next addition.

Phase rotation is tested before energisation. If the old board has an asbestos backing panel, we coordinate a licensed remover first.

Common questions.

What does a three phase upgrade cost in Sydney?

It depends on four things: overhead or underground, the distance from your meter position to the street pole or kerbside pillar, the size of the new switchboard, and whether the existing backing panel is asbestos. Send us a photo of the meter panel and the front of the closed switchboard with the address and we'll come back with a firm number. No surprises on the day.

How long from first call to power back on?

We lodge the network application the day we quote. Once Ausgrid or Endeavour confirms the connection, we book the connection date and the crew. The on-site changeover itself is one working day. Thorntek owns the timeline from lodgement through to the meter swap, so you're not chasing the network or the retailer at any point.

Will the power be off all day?

Yes for the working day of the changeover. We isolate the supply first thing, pull the old consumer mains, build the new switchboard, fit the new three phase mains, and test every connection and circuit. Power is back on by knock-off. Plan ahead for the fridge, the home office and anyone working from home.

Will I need a new switchboard at the same time?

Almost always yes. A single phase board isn't built or wired to take a three phase supply. The new board comes with a main switch sized for the new service, a safety switch on every circuit, surge protection built in, and a dedicated three phase circuit pre-run for the EV charger or ducted aircon. If the existing backing panel is asbestos, a licensed removalist handles the removal before the new board goes up.

Will my retailer plan change after the upgrade?

Your retailer stays the same unless you choose to switch. The plan itself may need re-quoting because three phase tariffs and controlled-load arrangements can differ from a single phase account. The smart meter swap is handled by the network as part of the changeover, not by the retailer. We give you the meter details and changeover date so the retailer can update your account cleanly.

What if my street is single phase only?

On some older Inner West side streets, parts of the Eastern Suburbs heritage pockets and pockets of the Blue Mountains, the low voltage mains in the street only carry single phase. Before any property upgrade can proceed, the network has to bring three phase down the street. We check the street mains at the application stage, raise it with Ausgrid or Endeavour, and tell you straight whether your upgrade can go ahead or the street needs upgrading first.

Do I need a new meter as well?

Yes. The single phase meter comes out and a three phase smart meter goes in as part of the changeover. The network attends the meter swap the same day we finish, so the new service goes live and the new meter is reading from the moment power comes back on.

Will a three phase upgrade work on a heritage or weatherboard home?

Yes. On a weatherboard the existing attachment bracket usually needs replacing on the fascia, bolted back to solid timber so the heavier new service cable hangs safely. On terraces we run the new aerial mains in cleanly and keep the streetscape tidy. The new switchboard goes in the same position the old one occupied wherever possible. The new switchboard goes in the same position the old one occupied wherever possible.

Can I add a three phase EV charger without upgrading the whole house?

Usually no. An 11 kW or 22 kW charger needs a three phase supply at the property, so if the house is single phase, the supply has to be upgraded first. The upside: once the upgrade is in, the same job adds headroom for the next aircon, the pool heat pump and the granny flat. We design the new switchboard with a dedicated three phase EV circuit so the charger install down the track is a straight bolt-on.
