01

The pole on your block, not the one on the street

A private power pole stands on your property and carries the service from the network's last pole into your switchboard. Replacing it is the owner's cost. Work on the service line, the point of attachment and the connection back to the network is Level 2 ASP work. Thorntek is Level 2 ASP accredited with both Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy for overhead, underground and metering.

02

Signs the pole needs replacing now, not next year

Common signs a private pole is failing:

  • A lean that wasn't there last year
  • A soft or rotten base
  • Splitting near the cross-arm, charring or termite tracks
  • Corroded attachment hardware
  • A defect notice from the network

If the network has tagged your pole, there is a window to fix it before disconnection. We can also issue a Level 2 ASP inspection report for insurers that ask for one at renewal.

03

Send us a photo, we'll tell you straight

Take three clear daylight photos: the full pole, a close-up of the base where the timber meets the ground, and the front of the meter box. Leave the cover on, never open the board yourself.

Text them to 1300 58 58 16 or email connect@thorntek.com.au. We call back the same day and tell you whether it is end of life, an attachment problem, or a sagging line that needs re-tensioning. No charge.

04

Hardwood or galvanised steel, and where each one fits

We fit both hardwood and galvanised steel poles and size each one to the job.

  • Hardwood costs less and is easy to dress on site.
  • Galvanised steel suits soft ground and salt-exposed coastal blocks.

Span length, conductor weight and the load you run set the pole class. We size to the real numbers.

05

What the replacement actually involves on the day

We book the network isolation, get dial before you dig clearance, set the new pole plumb and braced, and pour the surround. The service line moves to the new bracket, the conductors are re-tensioned, the lugs torqued, and the consumer mains tested before recommissioning. Power is back on and the meter live before we leave.

Steep or tight-access blocks get an EWP, traffic management and a job-specific SWMS. If there is asbestos backing on an old board, we flag it up front and coordinate a licensed remover. We work in clean, stable ground only.

06

Where we work and which network you're on

Thorntek is accredited with both Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy, so the network your pole connects to does not change who you call. We cover Sydney metro, the Hills, Hawkesbury, the Blue Mountains and the South-West Growth Corridor.

Outside that area the network is Essential Energy, which we do not cover. If your pole is there, we will point you to a Level 2 ASP working in that territory.

07

The paperwork is ours

Every network approval is lodged by us: the Notice of Arrangement, the isolation booking, consumer mains certification back to your retailer if the meter is touched, and the defect close-out. The crew arrives with the pole, the hardware and the test gear, and leaves the site clean with the certificate lodged.

Common questions.

Who actually owns the power pole on my property?

If the pole sits on your land between the street network and your house, it's almost always a private power pole and your responsibility, not Ausgrid's or Endeavour Energy's. The network owns the conductor up to the point of attachment on their last pole; everything past that down the private span and into the pole on your block is yours. Postcode tells us which network covers the connection, but ownership of the timber or steel in the ground is the landowner's.

When does a private power pole legally need replacing?

A pole gets condemned when the timber is rotting at ground level, when there's termite or fire damage to the load-bearing section, when it's leaning past the safe angle, when the point of attachment hardware is corroded through, or when the network issues a defect notice on it. A sound-test at the base usually answers it in five minutes: solid timber rings, rotten timber thuds. Acreage poles down long driveways in Dural, Glenhaven or the Hawkesbury cop the worst of it. If your insurer or property manager has asked for a written inspection on a private pole, we issue a Level 2 ASP inspection report you can hand straight to them.

Steel or hardwood for the replacement pole?

Hardwood is cheaper up front and still common in older suburbs across the Inner West and Eastern Suburbs. Galvanised steel costs more but lasts longer, especially on coastal blocks around Bondi, Coogee and the Northern Beaches where salt eats hardware fast, and on bushfire-prone acreage in the Blue Mountains. We match the pole to the site, the span length, the load and how long you want it to stand.

Who can legally replace a private power pole?

No. Work on the service line, the point of attachment, the pole itself and the connection back to the network requires Level 2 ASP accreditation. Thorntek holds Level 2 ASP 4869 with both Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy, covering overhead, underground and metering across the two networks we operate in.

How long does the power need to be off during a pole replacement?

For a straight like-for-like swap we typically isolate, swap and re-energise inside a single working day. Where the consumer mains are being upsized or the meter is moving at the same time the on-site window extends. Either way we book the isolation, coordinate everything, and confirm your outage window in writing the day before — usually an 8am start, power back on by knock-off. No open-ended waits.

My neighbour and I share the pole. Who pays?

Shared poles are common on battle-axe subdivisions, shared rural-residential easements and duplex driveway blocks. The fair split is usually proportional to who benefits, but the legal answer depends on the easement on the title. We inspect, write a clear report each owner can hand to the other, and quote the works once you agree how to share it. The pole still needs replacing either way.

How fast can you get out to look at it?

Text three photos to 1300 58 58 16 and we'll usually call back the same day with a plain answer on whether the pole needs replacing, whether the attachment hardware is the real issue, or whether you've just got a sagging line that needs re-tensioning. If a physical inspection is needed, we book it inside the same week across Sydney metro, the Hills, Hawkesbury, Blue Mountains. Emergency leaners after a storm get prioritised.

What does a private pole replacement cost?

Most domestic swaps land in a predictable range. The variables are pole type, span length, whether the consumer mains need upsizing at the same time, whether the meter is moving, and access — a flat, open driveway is straightforward, a steep or tight block that needs an EWP and traffic control is not. The photos give us enough to send a firm quote without a site visit charge.
